Florence Recommendations

November 30, 2018

If you ever find yourself in Florence...

Gelato

  • Gelateria Dei Neri: the best I have ever had. My favorite flavor: Strawberry Cheesecake. Other honorable mentions: Coffee, Cookies and Cream, Crema, Chocolate, Coconut. Via dei Neri, 9

  • People will tell you to go to Gelateria La Carraia (two locations) but I am not a huge fan. If you are in Florence and have time to try both, definitely try both but if you have to choose, pick Dei Neri. The closer location to FUA is Via dei Benci, 24

  • Magnum: This one is ice cream, not gelato but you get to make your own magnum bar, you pick your ice cream flavor, shell, and three toppings... so yummy! Piazza del Duomo, 47

American Food

  • Red Garter: different specials every night. Wings are super meaty, they have beer towers and the burgers looked amazing.  Via de' Benci, 33

  • Lion’s Fountain Irish Pub: their food food is GREAT and well priced. They also have different shots for each study abroad school (JWU=Limoncello and Blue Curacao), as well as student wristbands which give you free shots with a beer purchase. Super Lion’s Fries (chicken, bacon, ranch — SO good). Borgo degli Albizi, 34

Breakfast

  • Le Vespe Cafe: SUCH good American breakfast!! On Sunday they do brunch and have a different menu with featured items. The wait gets long so go right when they open. Get the Coxwell breakfast sandwich or Uova Rancheros with an Iced Mochachino. Via Ghibellina 76R

  • La Milkeria: YUMMY crepes and waffles (with Nutella of course!!) and they have flavored iced coffee (caramel, chocolate, etc.) Borgo degli Albizi, 87

Mexican

  • Tijuanas: Margarita Monday (happy hour all night = 4 euro margs that are amazing). They also have good nachos, chips, and salsa.

Italian and Pizza

  • Coquinarius: This one is a MUST VISIT! Michaela and I shared the "cheese and salami course" which actually had prosciutto and other types of meat, not just salami. If you like burrata cheese, its the best around but does not come on the board, you have to order it separately. For our meal we got the Pear and Cheese Raviolini ... it is to die for. Via delle Oche, 11R

  • OINOS Firenze: great for pizza AND pasta, plus tons of outdoor seating. Via dei Benci, 6

  • Trattoria ZaZa: I don’t like truffle but if you do, this is your heaven. They have a whole truffle section on the menu. I got pasta bolognese which was fantastic.

  • Pizzeria O’Vesuvio: the pizza is DELICIOUS and they make it right in front of you. This is where the Jersey Shore cast worked during their time in Florence so their clothes are hanging inside.

Florentine Paninis

  • All'antico Vinaio: this place is world famous and all the paninis they have are 5 euro! Definitely worth trying but beware of the pigeons flying all around. Via dei Neri, 76

  • I Fratellini: a literal hole in the wall but its really good. They serve wine and have numbered shelves outside the restaurant to set down your wine while eating your panini! Via dei Cimatori, 38

  • Pino’s: Very good and common for study abroad students. Try the Chicken Best. Via Giuseppe Verdi, 36

Quick Coffee, Breads, Croissant

  • Cafe Michelangelo: Croissants are yummy and he was so nice. They didn’t actually sell iced coffee but he made it for us and it was 3 euro for coffee and a croissant. Via Giuseppe Verdi, 28 (across the street on corner)

  • Shake Cafe: Caramel Iced Coffee, banana bread with chocolate chips. Via del Corso, 28

Rooftop Bar

  • The Westin Excelsior: This hotel has a rooftop restaurant and even has an area for those who are only after a few drinks. The prices are a bit expensive, but you are paying for the beautiful view. Beware: there are certain hours of the evening that all drinks are a minimum of 25 Euro. Piazza Ognissanti, 3 6th floor
